Anoushka Lucas is a composer, theatre maker and jazz singer from London.
Described as a “raw, natural talent” by Neil Cowley and “an exceptional
voice and a great songwriter” by Jamie Cullum, Anoushka’s first
breakthrough came when she won the 2013 Jazz FM ‘opening act’ competition
to open the first Love Supreme Festival. In early 2014 she met producer
Martin Terefe. Along with drummer Karl Brazil and keyboard-player Glen
Scott, Anoushka and Martin began writing and recording her debut album
together. They crafted a new sound, much wider and experimental than her
solo material that effortlessly combines jazz, blues and pop into an
unearthly and unique sound. After four long years the resulting album
“Dark Soul” isan exploration of all facets of a relationship. Her
experiences create an unflinching autobiographical honesty in her music
but this, combined with a sensitive warmth and her stinging sense of
humour peppering her concerts, makes for a performative experience that
will make you laugh and cry in equal measure. Lucas’ incredible live band
band (Ben Reed, Joseph Costi and Yusuf Ahmed) will be treating the
Underbelly audience to a scintillating evening of stunning jazz, hilarious
anecdotes and a night to remember from one of the “best songwriters of her
generation” (606).
