JACK Quartet

In 1960, Carter’s exhilarating Second Quartet won the Pulitzer Prize, his Third matching that success thirteen years later. In the latter, Carter divides the instruments into pairs, giving a sense of what he called ‘ever-varying perspectives of feelings, expression, rivalry and cooperation’, while the Fourth is preoccupied with ‘giving every member of the group its own identity’.
